Prophecies against surrounding cities
Egypt
Jeremiah 46:8 “Egypt is like the rising Nile River, like streams that flow swiftly”
Egypt was known for it’s power, glory, beauty, medicine and so much more. With all the wars breaking out, people thought they would be safe to go to Egypt, instead of listening to YHWH on where to go or be. But after the Babylonians conquered Egypt, there was only more devastation to follow, the Persians, Greeks and finally Rome.
Philistines
Jeremiah 47:4 “The time has come to destroy all the Philistine”
Philistia was the land of the Philistines, the southern coast part of Canaan. They had many conflicts with Israel, and had many idols, like Dagon (half fish and half man deity). This is why the prophecy talks about “water is rising in the north.. it will become an overflowing river”. Goliath the giant, that fought David, also came from Philistine, from the city of Gath.
Moab
Jeremiah 48:47 “But I will restore Moab in the last days,” declares YHWH. The judgement against Moab ends here.”
Moab was the son of Lot and his eldest daughter, born from an incestuous relationship after the destruction of Sodom and gomorrah. Even though the Moabites are related to Israel,they were hostile towards them during the Exodus time, and as verse 27 explains.. “they laugh at the people of Israel.. talk about them in contempt”. They also worshipped deities/gods that favor war and fortune.
