Numbers 16:10 Moshe asks to Korah, Dathan and Abiram – “you seek the priesthood as well?”
:13 They respond with “Is it little that you have brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness, that you would also seize total rule over us?”
:24 “Speak to the congregation, saying, ‘Move away from around the tents of Koraḥ, Dathan, and Abiram.’ ” Some translations say tents – but the original Hebrew word is MISKAN H4908 – miškān – which means Tabernacle!

These guys have set up their own Tabernacle, place to worship YHWH. The people want freedom. Not to be ruled by anoyone, and not told what to do. They have sinned and won’t enter the promised land, and now they want to go back to Egypt. They even set up their own Tabernacle. It is all about what THEY WANT. They want what was promised to them, conveniently forgetting their own broken promises.

The Sons of Korah

Numbers 16:32 says the ground swallowed Korah’s household and “every man that belonged to Korah.” However, Numbers 26:11 makes it clear that “the sons of Korah did not die.” This is evidenced by later Scripture, several psalms are addressed to or by the “To the chief Musician – Sons of Korah example Psalm 42:1″ (Psalms 42; 44–49; 84; 85; 87; 88; cf. 2 Chronicles 20:19). Samuel was also a descendant of Korah through his son Abiasaph (1 Chronicles 6:33-37). (Exodus 6:24 tells us the names of Korah’s sons were Assir, Elkanah, and Abiasaph.)

Psalm 42 is a very famous Psalm – and I’ll bet you didn’t know it was written for or by the Sons of Korah..

As a deer longs for the water streams, So my being longs for You, O Elohim.
My being thirsts for Elohim, for the living Ěl. When shall I enter in to appear before Elohim?
My tears have been my food day and night, While they say to me all day, “Where is your Elohim?”
.. I went with them to the House of Elohim, With the voice of joy and praise, A multitude keeping a festival!
..Wait for Elohim: for I shall yet thank Him, For the deliverance of His face!
..By day YHWH commands His kindness, And by night His song is with me; A prayer to the Ěl of my life.

Numbers 17:10 And YHWH said to Mosheh, “Bring Aharon’s rod back before the Witness, to be kept as a sign against the rebels, so that you put an end to their grumblings against Me, lest they die.”

In Hebrew the word Rod is MATTE H4294 – maṭṭê, which means Staff/Tribe/Branch. Choosing the rod of Aharon is how YHWH confirms that the tribe of Levi is still the chosen tribe to serve.

In Hebrew the word Witness is EDUT H5715 – ʿēḏûṯ, which also means Testimony. This is the Covenant/Torah on the Stone Tablets, which are placed inside the Ark, and they serve as the Witness or Testimony between YHWH and the people on the agreement made between them at Mount Sinia.
