Being Chosen , Name Meanings

2 John 1:1 “The Elder, To the elect lady and her children”

It seems like John is writing to some interesting lady in this letter, without giving her name. In the letter of 3 John 1:1 we see the same form of introduction, “The Elder, To the beloved Gaius”. The big problem between English and Hebrew / Greek, and even other languages – is that people’s names and words have deep meanings in other languages, but English is almost a “dead language”, because most english words doesn’t have meaning or meanings are lost. When you take an English name, and search for the original source from another languages, you will find the meaning of the original name in other languages like Greek or Hebrew. For example, if you say “Jesus”, there isn’t really a meaning to it. But when you say “Yeshua”, it means “YHWH Saves”.

So let’s look at what the Greek manuscript says in this verse, it says “The (ho) elder (presbyteros) elect/chose (eklektos) lady (Kyria)“. Kyria G2959 – kyria are still used today as a name in the forms of Keira and Ciara, meaning “a noble Lady”. So we don’t know if John addressed her as Lady or Kyria, but that could be the case in many instances in both Hebrew and Greek – when someone is speaking or writing a name – are they just addressing the name, or are they speaking the life meaning of the name with purpose? That is what we should be aware of with YHWH and Yeshua’s names as well. It is not just a name, we are speaking words with meaning. This is also why YHWH and people throughout Scripture would change names if the meaning of the name was not 100% correct or proper.

Interestingly, the word “elect” or chosen in this verse, is used a lot in the new testament. The greek word G1588 – eklektos means to be chosen, picked out, favorite, with implication. We see it in verses like Matthew 22:14, “For many are called, but few are chosen.”, Matthew 24:22, “And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect’s sake those days will be shortened.”, 1 Peter 2:9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light” and Revelation 17:14 “These will make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome them, for He is Adonai of lords and King of kings; and those who are with Him are called, chosen, and faithful.”
