4 Types of Sacrifices
The very first OFFERING in Scriptures was brought long before these laws/guidelines were brought in. The first offering was brought by Cain (fruits of the ground) and Abel (firstborn of his flock with its’ fat), and then Noah, Abraham, Jacob, etc. The Hebrew word for Offering (in Genesis, and Leviticus 2, 5 and 6) is MINHA H4503 – minḥâ, which means also a gift, present, a tribute.
The Scriptures here begins with IF and WHEN they bring an offering, this is how it should be done. The first 5 books (including part of Lev 6) each describes a type of offering/sacrifice. The first 2 offerings are know as FREE-WILL OFFERINGS.
- BURNT OFFERING (Lev 1) : Free-will offering, but also used as part of certain times/festivals. Can be a bull/sheep/goat (all male) or doves/pigeons. All of it gets burnt to ashes. Fire represents judgement and purification. Ashes represent mourning and repentance, and also that which was – doesn’t exist anymore.
- GRAIN OFFERING (Lev 2) : Free-will offering, also used in certain times/festivals. Also know as Memorial/Remembrance offering. No leaven or honey allowed. Add oil and frankincense. Always have salt. Some of it is burnt, and the rest is given to the Priests to eat/enjoy.
- FELLOWSHIP OFFERING (Lev 3) : Also called Peace or Thanks Offering. This is to bring you meat first to YHVH to basically say thanks and dedicate it to YHVH. This can be male or female animals. The blood is taken out and fat is burnt for YHVH. The rest is taken back to be enjoyed with friends & family (fellowship). Done during festivals.
- SIN OFFERING (Lev 4) : Here 3 methods are given. 1 – Priest & Whole congregation : young bull. 2 – Leader : male goat. 3 – Common person : female goat or lamb. The animals blood is used and the fat is burnt, but the rest of the whole animal is burnt outside the camp.
From Lev 5-6 it explains how to use these type of offerings in combination, depending on the scenario. If a person has guilt, he should first confess his guilt. Depending on what he has available, he can take a female goat/lamb/dove/pigeon or flour and silver and use to make a Sin Offering, as well as a burnt offering. This is then called a GUILT OFFERING, but it is a combination of burnt/sin offering.
No Sacrifices
Consider Abel – somehow Abel just did it right and it pleased YHVH. Cain didn’t bring his best. And if you can’t or won’t bring something to YHVH as a true gift from the heart, then rather not bring it at all!
Leviticus 1:2 “When anyone of you brings an offering to יהוה”. The Hebrew word for OFFERING (used for the first time here in Leviticus 1, and continues in Chapters 2-7 and onwards) is KORBAN H7133 – qārbān – of which the root word means to DRAW NEAR, approach, present, come close.
Here is what YHVH wants : He wants OBEDIENCE. He DOES NOT WANT SACRIFICES. An offering is suppose to be a Free-will Offering. Consider the following verses in Scripture:
- Isa 1:11 “Of what use to Me are your many slaughterings?” declares יהוה. “I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams and the fat of fed beasts. I do not delight in the blood of bulls, or of lambs or goats.
- Hosea 6:6 “For I delight in kindness and not slaughtering, and in the knowledge of Elohim more than burnt offerings.”
- Micah 6:7-8 “Is יהוה pleased with thousands of rams or ten thousand rivers of oil? Shall I give my first-born for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my being? He has declared to you, O man, what is good. And what does יהוה require of you but to do right, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your Elohim?”
- Amos 5:22 ““Though you offer Me burnt offerings and your grain offerings, I do not accept them, nor do I look on your fattened peace offerings.”
- Psalm 40:6-8 “Slaughtering and meal offering You did not desire; You have opened my ears; Burnt offering and sin offering You did not ask for. Then I said, “See, I have come; In the scroll of the Book it is prescribed for me. I have delighted to do Your pleasure, O my Elohim, And Your Torah is within my heart.”
- Hosea 14:2 “Take away all crookedness, and accept what is good, and we render the bulls of our lips”
- Psalm 51 “…See, You have desired truth in the inward parts.. that my mouth declare Your praise. For You do not desire slaughtering, or I would give it; … The slaughterings of Elohim are a broken spirit, A heart broken and crushed, O Elohim, These You do not despise.”
- Psalm 50:11-15 “I know all the birds of the mountains, And all moving in My field are Mine. If I were hungry, I would not speak to you; For the world is Mine, and all that fills it. Do I eat the flesh of bulls, Or drink the blood of goats? Offer thanksgiving to Elohim, And pay your vows to the Most High. And call upon Me in the day of distress – Let Me rescue you, and you esteem Me.”
- Psalm 141:2 “Let my prayer be prepared before You as incense, The lifting up of my hands as the evening offering.“
