SOME STUDY GEMS:
Study Gem : Make Amends
Num 5:6-8 “When a man or woman commits any sin that men commit in trespass against YHWH, and that being is guilty, then they shall confess their sin which they have done. And he shall restore his guilt in its principal, plus one-fifth of it, and give it to whom he has been guilty. But if the man has no relative to restore the guilt to, the guilt which is restored goes to YHWH, for the priest, in addition to the ram of the atonement with which atonement is made for him.”
This is almost a repeat on Leviticus 6:1-7, that when a person has done a wrong to another person, then he should make amends plus more, as restitution. Numbers 5:6-8 doesn’t make a list of what was done wrong, except that if you sin against another, it is against YHWH! See this translation “When a man or woman shall commit any sin that men commit, to do a trespass against YHWH, and that person be guilty;” That is how you are to view your neighbors and people around you.. whatever you are doing to them, you are doing to YHWH! Numbers 5:7 says you must first Confess and then Make Amends plus more!
Yeshua said the following:
- Matt 5:23-24 “If, then, you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother holds whatever against you, leave your gift there before the altar, and go, first make peace with your brother, and then come and offer your gift.”
- Matt 7:12 “Therefore, whatever you wish men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Torah and the Prophets”
- Matt 25:40 “And the Sovereign shall answer and say to them, ‘Truly, I say to you, in so far as you did it to one of the least of these My brothers, you did it to Me.’”
Study Gem : Jealous Husband
Num 5:12-31 “there was no witness against her, nor was she caught, and a spirit of jealousy comes upon him and he becomes jealous of his wife who has defiled herself, or a spirit of jealousy comes upon him and he becomes jealous of his wife although she has not defiled herself”
Although we absolutely know that marriage is very important to YHWH, there isn’t much marriage counselling advice anywhere in Scripture. This is almost the closest action the husbands get to do, when he gets a rage of jealousy, and they need help. The principle here is that jealousy and doubt is absolutely normal, and also that the other party have to be deemed innocent until proven guilty.
But this picture that is presented to us, is a reflection on YHWH and His People. The very second commandment given in Exodus 20, says YHWH is a Jealous Elohim. He burns with love and passion for His People.. but when they turn and do things in secret, His Jealousy burns. We often see that in men as well. They love their wifes so much.. and if the woman spends too much time with other men, or given other men attention, the husband starts to burn inside himself. This is how we should see YHWH too, because going forward in Scripture, this word for jealousy is mentioned about 70 times. The Hebrew word is QANNA/QANA/QINA (H7065/H7067/H7058), which comes down to be zealous, envious, jealous anger.
Here are some verses from Scripture:
- Exo 20:5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I YHWH Elohim am a jealous H7067 Elohim
- Deu 4:24 For the YHWH Elohim is a consuming fire, even a jealous H7067 Elohim.
- Isa 37:32 For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and they that escape out of mount Zion: the zeal H7068 of YHWH of hosts shall do this.
- Zec 8:2 Thus saith YHWH of hosts; I was jealous for Zion with great jealousy, H7068 and I was jealous for her with great fury.
- Joe 2:18 Then will YHWH be jealous H7065 for his land, and pity his people.
WOMAN’s HEAD/HAIR/COVERING
In verse 18 it mentions to “shall uncover the woman’s head”. The translation in Hebrew is to loosen the hair, actually more like mess up her hair, to make a mess. In the same way someones’ hair would look like when they are in mourning. Some would use this verse as prove that woman always covered their hair, but that is not the purpose of this verse, and it is not proof either for always having a womans’ hair covered. This is not to say that you don’t have to cover your hair, it is absolutely the choice of the individual. It is a beautiful thing to have the hair covered and protected.
Study Gem : Nazarite Vow
Numbers 6:2 “When a man or woman does separate, by making a vow of a Nazirite, to be separate to YHWH”
Not much is known about the Nazarite vow, except it seems to be a vow a person makes in his own capacity to be devoted/dedicated/consecrated, for a short period of time, to YHWH. By whatever vow you are making, you have to do 4 things. Do not drink alcohol or anything grape related, do not let razor come near your head (or cut your hair), do not come near or touch the dead, and give an offering/sacrifice to end your vow. The only person we know of who was to be a Nazarite, and was commanded to his mother by an Angel, she also was not to drink wine or cut her boys’ hair, was Samson. However, Samson killed a lot of people. Numbers 6 does say however, a Nazirite is not to come close to his own family when they die, or if someone dies suddently (not killed) – so perhaps that is the difference.
Either way, when we look at the Hebrew meaning of these words, they make even more sense for someone like Samson. By the way, there is speculation that Samuel and John the Baptist was also Nazarites from birth, but Scripture doesn’t explicitly say so. In Hebrew it says if the man or woman Separate (PALA) themselves, to Vow (NADAR) of Nazarite (NAZIR) to Separate (NAZAR).
This is why english translations are so bad. Here we have the word Separate used for 2 Hebrew words : PALA and NAZAR. Here are the Hebrew definitions.
PALA H6381 – pālā’ : wondrous marvellous works, performing or showing power, extraordinary and hard
NADAR H5087 – nāḏar : a vow to give something to YHWH
NAZIR H5139 – nāzîr : devoted and untrimmed
NAZAR H5144 – nāzar : dedicate/devote oneself and keep separate
If the man or woman are going to have to do wondrous/marvellous/extraordinary works, they will give their lives, for a period of time, to be devoted and untrimmed to YHWH.
