Teach our children

Psalm 78:5 “For He established a testimony in Jacob, And appointed a law in Israel, Which He commanded our fathers, That they should make them known to their children“. We see this command back in the Torah in Deuteronomy 6:7You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.”

The words used in this Psalm for our children is speak it, pour it out, hear it, tell it, do not hide it, testimony, show, make it known, not forget!
Like verse 7 says, “That they might set their hope in Elohim, and not forget the works of Elohim, but keep his commandments”

Some of the hebrew words used in this Psalm is:

  • Sapar H5608 – sāp̄ar : scribe (writing things over and over), tell, declare, account, show. Like used in Genesis 15:5 “And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell H5608 the stars, if thou be able to number H5608 them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be.”
  • Yada H3045 – yāḏaʿ : know, knowledge, understand, acquintance, consider, declare, teach. Yada is close to the word
  • Yara H3384 – yārâ which means to teach, shoot, teacher – which is the word where JERUsalem comes from. YARA-SHALOM (explained in the post from Joshua 15, click here to read more). Shalom doesn’t just mean peace, but also goodness and being restored. The word Yada is used almost a thousand times just in the old testament! Psalm 83:18 “That H3045 men may know H3045 that thou, whose name alone is YHWH, art the most high over all the earth.”
  • Sama/Shema H8085 – šāmaʿ : to hear and obey, understand, obedient, diligent, sound, declare, perceive. This is one of the most important and profound words in Hebrew, we have made a couple of posts on it already, but for example see Deuteronomy 4 (click here to read more), verse 1 “And now, O Yisra’ĕl, listen to the laws and the right-rulings which I am teaching you to do“
  • Edut H5715 – ʿēḏûṯ : testimony or witness, which is the same name given to the Ark itself, in which the Covenant that was written by YHWH on the tablets was placed, in Exodus 25:16 “And thou shalt put into the ark the testimony H5715 which I shall give thee.” The Ark is called the Witness or Testimony.
  • Nasar H5341 – nāṣar : to keep, preserve, protect, a watchman, observe, watch over, to guard. It is our duty to protect and keep YHWH’s commands and Words. Psalm 25:10 “All the paths of YHWH are mercy and truth unto such as keep H5341 his covenant and his testimonies.”
  • Samar H8104 – šāmar : close to the word Nasar, also to keep, guard, observe, watch over, protect, save lives. We did a post study on this word in 1 Kings 2 (click here to read more). This word was first used as part of the duty given to Adam to “keep” the garden of Eden in Genesis 2:15 “And YHWH Elohim took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it. H8104”
  • Ra’a H7200 – rā’â : see, look, behold, show, appear, consider, respect, perceive, regard, a vision, watch. A beautiful verse where this word was used first in Creation, in Genesis 1:4 “And H7200 YHWH saw H7200 the light, that it was good: and YHWH divided the light from the darkness.”
  • Neged H5048 – neḡeḏ : in the presence, before you, in sight of, in your view or purpose. Psalm 119:168 “I have kept thy precepts and thy testimonies: for all my ways are before thee. H5048”

Proverbs 22:6, which says, “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it“.
