Relying on things instead of YHWH, Ichabod
1 Sam 4:3 “Why has YHWH smitten us today before the Philistines? Let us bring the ark of the covenant of YHWH from Shiloh to us, so that He comes into our midst and save us from the hand of our enemies.” Verse 10-11, “.. And the slaughter was very great.. And the ark of Elohim was captured..” , 21 “And she called the child Iḵaḇoḏ, saying, “The esteem/glory has departed from Yisra’ĕl!”
H350 – ‘î-ḵāḇôḏ, where the “i” means no. So H3519 – kāḇôḏ means glory in abundance, honour, glorious. Psalm 57:5, “Be thou exalted, YHWH, above the heavens; let thy glory H3519 be above all the earth.”
Even though the ark of YHWH had His KABOD on it, and the Philistines didn’t know what to do with it as it was so powerful, YHWH wouldn’t let Israel use it to their advantage in the war without consulting YHWH first. They just used the ark as a powerful tool, but would not make right their ways before the Elohim of the ark.
Living under a government
1 Sam 8:7 And YHWH said to Shemu’ĕl, “Listen to the voice of the people in all that they say to you, for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me from reigning over them.
Verse 11-18 : Your rulers will have your children work for them, they will take the best in the land away from the people for themselves, your children will make their lives full of gold and beauty, and the best foods and liquor. They will take the land, all the best will go to them. They will tax you and put heavy financial burdens on you. And when you cry out to YHWH, He will not answer – because you have voted for your own rulers.
So far, YHWH used teachers and leaders like Moses, Levi priests, judges and prophets to guide Israel. The Israelites were all brothers, and no one ruled over anyone. If they needed help, they go to a prophet, judge or priest. They could live on the land that belonged to their tribe. But, the Israelites rebelled and didn’t like the judges (not that Samuels’ two sons were any good judges either). But they also looked at how the people around them were living.. and they also want to look and act the same way. YHWHs’ reaction.. they are rejecting YHWH as their King.
