1 Samuel 1:11 And she made a vow and said, “O YHWH of hosts, if You would indeed look on the affliction of your female servant and remember me

YHWH of HOSTS, where hosts in Hebrew is SABA / SAVA/ TZAVA, H6635 – ṣāḇā‘, translated in Hebrew mostly as “Tzavaot” or “Tzva’ot“, and is used 485 in the old testament. It first appeared in Genesis 2:1, “Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. H6635″. Host,  a vast group, like angels or stars, or people. Also a group of people for war, like in Exodus 12:51, “And it came to pass the selfsame day, that YHWH did bring the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt by their armies. H6635

Malachi 3:17, “And they shall be mine, saith YHWH of hosts (H6635) in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him.”

In Scripture, and until quite recently, the problem of infertility was attributed physiologically to women, though ultimately it is YHWH who holds the keys to opening and closing the womb. But often, women suffer deep shame and heartache as a consequence, their barrenness attributed to some hidden wrong, sin, or flaw. There are several woman, matriarchs, who suffered barreness. But in each of these stories, the son was ultimately dedicated back to YHWH. YHWH protects these woman also for His special purpose, and shows His Might that nothing is impossible, even in old age.

  • Sarah: Abraham’s wife, Sarah, was barren for many years. She and Abraham, at an advanced age, were promised a son through divine intervention, resulting in the birth of Isaac. Sarah struggled with unbelief, impatience, anger and disrespect.
  • Rebekah: The wife of Isaac, Rebekah, also experienced infertility for a period. She and Isaac eventually had twins, Jacob and Esau, who were instrumental in the continuation of the lineage of Israel. The Bible doesn’t tell us about Rebekah’s emotional reaction to her infertility. But it does let us know that Isaac was 40 years old when he married Rebekah. Twenty years later, when Isaac was 60, she finally gave birth to twins. She must have had a lot of questions, heartache, patience and perseverence.
  • Rachel: Rachel, Jacob’s wife, was also described as barren, a fact that caused significant distress and even some rivalry with her sister Leah. She later became the mother of Joseph and Benjamin, two other important figures in the biblical narrative. Between both these sisters they had a lot of strive, envy and competition.
  • Hannah: Hannah, the wife of Elkanah, was barren and deeply mourned the lack of children. Her fervent prayers led to the birth of Samuel, a prophet and judge of Israel. She obviously was annoyed with the other wife, making the heartache and depression much worse.
  • Samson’s Mother: The unnamed wife of Manoah, mother of Samson, experienced infertility. She was blessed with a son, Samson, a powerful figure in the Book of Judges. She had to have faith and be obedient, putting her child in a powerful yet scary position.
  • Ruth: Ruth was married for ten years and never conceived when her husband, Naomis’ son, died. She wanted to stay with Naomi, her mother-in-law, but because she had no son, Naomi told her to go. Ruth must have also felt extreme heartbreak. But YHWH rewarded her, for staying with with Naomi and choosing YHWH as her Elohim.
  • Elizabeth: The mother of John the Baptist, and wife to a priest, had her prayers finally answered at an old age after an angel appeared to her. She didn’t question it, showing her faith and patience.

1 Samuel 1:20 And it came to be at the turn of days, that Ḥannah conceived and bore a son, and called his name Shemu’ĕl, “Because I have asked YHWH for him.”

Samuels’ name, H8050 – šᵊmû’ēl, is made up of two words:
SAMA / SHEMA H8085 – šāmaʿ – meaning to hear and obey! Hearken, publish, understand, be obedient, diligently do. This word is used 1,159 times in the old testament, and one of the most beautiful scriptures is in Deut 4:1 “And now, O Yisra’ĕl, SHEMA to the laws and the right-rulings which I am teaching you to do“, which we explained the word Shema in Deut 3-4 (click here for more).
EL H410 – ‘ēl, referes to “God” or Elohim in Hebrew.

1 Samuel 3:11, “And YHWH said to Samuel, Behold, I will do a thing in Israel, at which both the ears of every one that heareth it shall tingle. H6750″

H6750 – ṣālal – rattle together (as the ears in reddening with shame, or the teeth in chattering with fear):
H6749 – ṣālal to sink, be submerged  (heart sinking moment)

Exo 15:10 “Thou didst blow with thy wind, the sea covered them: they sank H6749 as lead in the mighty waters.
2Ki 21:12 “Therefore thus saith YHWH God of Israel, Behold, I am bringing such evil upon Jerusalem and Judah, that whosoever heareth of it, both his ears shall tingle. H6750
Hab 3:16 “When I heard, my belly trembled; my lips quivered H6750 at the voice: rottenness entered into my bones, and I trembled in myself, that I might rest in the day of trouble: when he cometh up unto the people, he will invade them with his troops.

Tinkling vs Tickling
Paul wrote about tickling ears, not the same as tingling ears. 2 Timothy 4:3-4 “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but having itching/tickling ears, they shall heap to themselves teachers in accordance with their own lusts. And they will turn their ears away from the truth and be led astray by fables.”

The difference is, tingling ears as the Scriptures mentioned above, is where YHWH speaks and the ones who hear it, their hearts will sink, their ears and cheeks will burn with shame. Tickling ears is where the person listen and accept doctrine that sounds pleasing to them, that makes them feel good (opposite to tingling ears, where the person feels bad). Doctrine that preaches about making the person and his life better and convenient, it is all about what man wants and what he wants to do. It tickles his ears and he likes it, and chooses to accept it for his own pleasure. He might be thinking he is doing good.. but it will be more convenient than good. Following YHWH’s way, is not always pleasing and convenient. It is a way that tests your obedience and willingness to stand up for Him. Everytime we return to YHWH on our knees and ask His way, and when He speaks, it will be tingling ears that hits you. It will be like a light shown on your life, nothing hidden, and He will show you your sins and you will feel ashamed. That is always the first step to healing and cleansing, facing the things that makes us ashamed.
