YHWH is the same always
Psalm 86:5 “For You, YHWH, are good, and ready to forgive, And abundant in mercy to all those who call upon You.”
Psalm 89:1 “I will sing of the mercies of YHWH forever!”
In a previous post we made a list of a couple of Psalms (and not even all of them, click here to read more), that clearly prophesy and talks about the Messiah/Anointed One. In Psalm 89 you can clearly see YHWH is talking about Yeshua His Son. But this is not just for Yeshua – but for those who follow Him – His seed/children/followers. And He makes it quite clear, that Yeshua’s children/followers must also keep His Laws and Commandments:
Ps 89:27-37:
Also I will make him my firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth.
My mercy will I keep for him for evermore, and my covenant shall stand fast with him.
His seed also will I make to endure for ever, and his throne as the days of heaven.
If his children forsake my law, and walk not in my judgments;
If they break my statutes, and keep not my commandments;
Then will I visit their transgression with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes.
Nevertheless my lovingkindness will I not utterly take from him, nor suffer my faithfulness to fail.
My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips.
Once have I sworn by my holiness that I will not lie unto David.
His seed shall endure for ever, and his throne as the sun before me.
It shall be established for ever as the moon, and as a faithful witness in heaven. Selah.
- Psalm 102:26-28 repeats this, “They shall perish, but thou shalt endure: yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; as a vesture shalt thou change them, and they shall be changed. But thou art the same, and thy years shall have no end. The children of thy servants shall continue, and their seed shall be established before thee.”
- Isaiah 40:8 “The grass withers, the flower fades: but the word of our Elohim shall stand for ever.”
- Malachi 3:6 “For I am YHWH, I change not“
- James 1:17 “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father’s Light, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.”
Grace and Mercy
Psalm 86:5 “For You, YHWH, are good, and ready to forgive, And abundant in mercy to all those who call upon You.”
Psalm 89:1 “I will sing of the mercies of YHWH forever!”
Using the same verses for the topic above, about YHWH always being the same, let us look at the words Grace and Mercy. There is a perception among christians that YHWH never was merciful until Yeshua came along, and because of Yeshua we now have mercy – this is not true. We have made a couple of posts already on Grace (click here to read more), to show that YHWH is extremely Gracious and Merciful since the beginning of time – and like He says in Malachi 3:6 “For I am YHWH, I change not”.
There are a few variations in Hebrew for mercy and grace. The hebrew word used here in Psalm 86 and 89 is Hesed H2617 – ḥeseḏ, meaning mercy, kindness, lovingkindness, goodness. This is the same word used in Psalm 23:6 “Surely goodness and mercy H2617 shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of YHWH for ever.” The first time this specific word is used, is actually with Lot being saved from the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, in Genesis 19:19, Behold now, thy servant hath found grace in thy sight, and thou hast magnified thy mercy, H2617 which thou hast shewed unto me in saving my life”. Here Lot is using both words, GRACE and MERCY. Grace in Hebrew is Hen H2580 – ḥēn, meaning grace and favour. It’s root word is Hanan H2603 – ḥānan, meaning mercy, gracious, pity, or to cover and protect, like pitching a tent or camp for someone to lie down and rest. This is the same word using for protecting and having grace with Noah, in Genesis 6:8 “But Noah found grace H2580 in the eyes of YHWH”
Zechariah 12:10 “And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace H2580 and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.”
