Deut 29:12 The literal translation word for word in Hebrew would be “Pass through YHWH’s (a) covenant/agreement/pledge (with) oath/curse (which) YHWH cut/make today”

The word oath in Hebrew also means curse, H423 – ‘ālâ. The complete meaning of the word is “The curse, that results from not keeping the oath

In this chapter we see the word covenant and oath (which also means curse) together. In verse 14, “And not with you alone I am making this covenant and this oath (ALA),  with him who stands here with us today before YHWH our Elohim, as well as with him who is not here with us today.”

Also in verse 19, “And it shall be, when he hears the words of this oath/curse (ALA), that he should bless himself in his heart, saying, ‘I have peace though I walk in the stubbornness of my heart,’ …. and every curse (ALA) that is written in this book shall settle on him“

The last part of verse 19 could be translated in the following ways, ‘I shall have peace even though I followed the dictates of my heart as though the drunkard could be included with the sober’, or “When such a person hears the words of this oath he invokes a blessing on himself and therefore thinks ‘I will be safe, even though I persist in going my own way..’”, or ‘Shalom, peace will be to me for I walk in the stubbornness of my heart.’

Deut 29:18 “lest there should be among you a man or woman or clan or tribe, whose heart turns away today from YHWH our Elohim, to go and serve the mighty ones of these nations, lest there should be among you a root bearing bitterness or wormwood.”

The Hebrew word Wormwood, is LA’ANA H3939 – laʿănâ, which means bitterness. The reference to wormwood points already to a prophecy that Jeremiah repeats in Jer 9:15 and again in Jer 23:15 “Therefore thus saith the YHWH of hosts concerning the prophets; Behold, I will feed them with wormwood, H3939 and make them drink the water of gall: for from the prophets of Jerusalem is profaneness gone forth into all the land.” It is repeated in Lamentations and the prophet Amos again, (Amos 5:7) “He turns judgement to wormwood“.

In Revelations the word is used in greek again (G894 – apsinthion), Rev 8:11 “And the name of the star is called Wormwood: G894 and the third part of the waters became wormwood; G894 and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter.”

There is also a herb plant called wormwood, known for its bitterness. It makes a dark green oil and is very potent. It is antifungal, insecticidal, antimalarial and can kill intestinal worms.

Scattered & Gathered In.  Physically and Spiritually scattered. Some cannot physically keep the Law, and some do not have the spiritual guidance to keep the Law. But, when the words of the Law come upon you, and you “bring it back/gather (Kibuts) to your heart”, then YHWH will gather (Kibuts) you. Deut 30:11 “For this command which I am commanding you today, it is not too hard for you, nor is it far off.“

Deut 30:1-4 “And it shall be, when all these words come upon you, the blessing and the curse which I have set before you, and you shall bring them back to your heart among all the gentiles where YHWH your Elohim drives/scatter you, and shall turn back to YHWH your Elohim and obey His voice, according to all that I command you today, with all your heart and with all your being, you and your children, then YHWH your Elohim shall turn back your captivity, and shall have compassion on you, and He shall turn back and gather you from all the peoples where YHWH your Elohim has scattered you. If any of you are driven out to the farthest parts under the heavens, from there YHWH your Elohim does gather you, and from there He does take you.“

If you return (Shema, hear and obey) to the Torah (words, commands) He will gather (Kibbutz) you. If you meet Him halfway, He will meet you halfway.
Scattered” in Hebrew is H6327 – pûṣ, which means to break apart, cast abroad, spread abroad, dash to pieces.
Gathered in” in Hebrew is QABAS H6908 – qāḇaṣ, the same word where Kibbutz comes from.

Perhaps you have heard about the Kibbutz’s in Israel? A kibbutz is a collective settlement, primarily found in Israel, where members share everything in common, including property, resources, and labor, traditionally based on agriculture. Sometimes young people will spend a year there, volunteering to labor and learn the old Hebrew ways.

Deut 31:16 “And this people shall rise and whore after the mighty ones of the strangers of the land into the midst of which they shall enter, and forsake Me and break My covenant which I have made with them.”

YHWH know their hearts, and He knows they will break the covenant.  The word break, in Hebrew is PARAR H6565 – pārar, which is a strong word meaning to make NULL and VOID.  This same word is used in Numbers 30:12 where a husband can cancel/make void a vow that the wife made, “But if her husband hath utterly H6565 made them void H6565 on the day he heard them; then whatsoever proceeded out of her lips concerning her vows, or concerning the bond of her soul, shall not stand: her husband hath made them void; H6565 and YHWH shall forgive her.

This exact same word is used in the Hebrew manuscripts of the Gospel of Matthew, in Matthew 5:17, “Don’t think that I came to destroy/cancel/void (PARAR) the law or the prophets. I didn’t come to destroy/cancel/void (PARAR), but to fulfill.”

So even thought the bride/Israel/all who accept the covenant, breaks the covenant, Yeshua came to keep it and fulfill the Husband/Bridegrooms’ part of the covenant.  Our Father YHWH set the covenant in place, but He knew the Brides’ heart would wander off and follow the worlds’ ways.  But Yeshua came to keep His side, now for all who will return to Him and His covenant, He will accept them.

Deut 29:14 “And not with you alone I am making this covenant and this oath,  with him who stands here with us today before YHWH our Elohim, as well as with him who is not here with us today.””
