Isaiah 1:1 “The vision of Isaiah”

The Hebrew name for Isaiah is H3470 – yᵊšaʿyâ. Does the Hebrew name look familiar? Yeshua Yah, meaning YHWH is Salvation, or YHWH Saves!

Isaiah is mentioned in 2 Kings 14-20 and 2 Chron 26-32, He lived during the same time as Micah and Hosea (the two prophetic books we already covered), and he also lived during the final days of Israel and Judah, before their exiles. Isaiah’s book is the largest prophetic book in the Bible/Scriptures, with 66 Chapters. The New Testament contains at least 85 direct quotations and over 300 allusions to the book of Isaiah, making it the most quoted Old Testament prophet in the New Testament.

Isaiah 1:9 “Except YHWH of hosts had left unto us a very small remnant, we should have been as Sodom, and we should have been like unto Gomorrah.”

In our previous post with Micah 7 we mentioned how the word “Remnant” are always referenced. The root Hebrew word for Remnant is Sarid H8300 – śārîḏ, from the same family of words H7605 – šᵊ’ār, Shaarit H7611 – šᵊ’ērîṯ, H7604 – šā’ar, and H8277 – śāraḏ. The meaning of these are “to escape”, survive, to spare, left over, left behind, residue, the rest, remainder.

These people are the ones that escape by grace, in the midst of an evil nation, like Sodom and Gomorrah, or Noah, or the last ones scattered throughout earth that hold on the YHWH’s Way. It is not just those who remain.. but those who remain loyal to the commandments given by YHWH.

Isaiah 11 that talks about the Messiah Yeshua, in the last days of Revelation, in Isaiah 11:11-12, “And it shall come to pass in that day, that YHWH shall set his hand again the second time to recover the remnant of his people, which shall be left, from ..(all over the earth)… And he shall set up an ensign for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth.” There are a few prophecies about the remnant being dispersed, and they will be gathered again by YHWH.

Isaiah 1:9 “we should have been as Sodom, and we should have been like unto Gomorrah.”

The Hebrew words for Sodom is H5467 – sᵊḏōm and Gomorrah is H6017 – ʿămōrâ, where Sodom means burning, and Gomorrah called the twin of Sodom, means “submerged“. See our previous posts about the meaning of Fire (click here), which include anger, judgement and cleansing. This verse says that if YHWH doesn’t save a remnant, everyone will become like Sodom and Gomorrah. Yeshua even says the same thing in Matthew 24:22, “If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the sake of the elect those days will be shortened”.

These two cities have become such an example of the sinful world. We have been introduced to them since Genesis, and they are mentioned by many prophets, Yeshua, the apostles and even in Revelation. In 2 Peter 2:6 we read, “And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorra into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an example unto those that after should live ungodly

When Yeshua sent the disciples to share the word of YHWH, in Matthew 10:14 “And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorra in the day of judgment, than for that city.” A prophecy about Jerusalem, in Revelation 11:8 “And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Messiah Yeshua was crucified.”

Isaiah 2:2-3 “And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the YHWH’S house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it. And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of YHWH, to the house of the Elohim of Jacob; and He will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law (Torah H8451), and the word of YHWH from Jerusalem.”

Micah and Isaiah were prophesying at the same time during the Exiles, and Isaiah’s words are repeated in Micah 4:2, “And many nations shall come, and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of YHWH, and to the house of the Elohim of Jacob; and he will teach us of His Ways, and we will walk in his paths: for the Torah H8451 shall go forth of Zion, and the word of YHWH from Jerusalem.”

Isaiah 7:14 “Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel”

In Isaiah we will get a glimpse of who Yeshua the Messiah is:

  • Immanuel – YHWH is with us (Isaiah 7:14)
  • Prince of peace (Isaiah 9:6)
  • Shepherd who gathers lambs in his arms (Isaiah 40:11)
  • Servant who brings justice (Isaiah 42:1)
  • Man of sorrows – punished for peace (Isaiah 53:3,5)
