Inheritance
Joshua 13:32-33 “These Mosheh gave as an inheritance in the desert plains of Mo’aḇ beyond the Yardĕn. But to the tribe of Lĕwi Mosheh gave no inheritance. YHWH, Elohim of Yisrael, He was their inheritance, as He had said to them.”
The word inheritance is mentioned almost 20 times in these few chapters. Today’s reading was about what was inherited and what is to come. The definition of inheritance is, someone who owns something, gives it to someone else when they die. We know 2 things, YHWH owns everything – it all belongs to Him, but He cannot die. However He did send His only begotten son to be born in the flesh, died and rose again. Psalm 24:1 “The earth belongs to YHWH, And all that fills it – The world and those who dwell in it.” Deuteronomy 10:14 “See, the heavens and the heaven of heavens belong to YHWH your Elohim, also the earth with all that is in it.”
The Hebrew word for inheritance is NAHAL H5157 – nāḥal or NAHALA H5159 – naḥălâ, which also means to possess, to divide, acquire. At the end of the day, whatever is given to the tribes, Israel and even us, it still belongs to YHWH, and He can give and take away – not just for His children, but for anyone, because it all belongs to Him. Job 1:21 “And he said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I return there. YHWH has given, and YHWH has taken away. Blessed be the Name of YHWH.””
YHWH says this in Isaiah 19:25 “whom YHWH of hosts shall bless, saying, “… and Yisrael My inheritance.” And in Micah 7:18 “Who is an Ěl like You – taking away crookedness and passing over the transgression of the remnant of His inheritance? He shall not retain His wrath forever, for He Himself delights in kindness and mercy.” And in Zechariah 8:12 “Because of the sowing of peace the vine does give its fruit, the ground does give her increase, and the heavens do give their dew. And I shall cause the remnant of this people to inherit all these.”
Perhaps if we could really realize that we are HIS, His Inheritance – and we are living and given an inheritance, that CAN be taken away, maybe people would live with a different mindset. What you have is not yours, that you acquired in your own power, it is a gift. Today we are surely living in another time, full of lies and deception. Jeremiah 16:19 “O YHWH, my strength and my stronghold and my refuge, in the day of distress the gentiles shall come to You from the ends of the earth and say, “Our fathers have inherited only falsehood, futility, and there is no value in them.””
Psalm 82:8 Arise, O Elohim, judge the earth, For You shall possess all the nations.
Psalm 119:111 “Your witnesses/testimony H5715 are my inheritance forever, For they are the joy of my heart.” H5715 EDUT – The Commands/Laws/Torah placed in the ark as the witness/testimony by those who agreed to live by it.
Jebus ~ Jerusalem
Joshua 15:63 “As for the Yeḇusites (Jebusites), the inhabitants of Yerushalayim (Jerusalem), the children of Yehuḏah (Judah) were unable to drive them out, so the Yeḇusites have dwelt with the children of Yehuḏah at Yerushalayim to this day.”
The Jebusites were, according to the books of Joshua and Samuel from the Hebrew Bible, a Canaanite tribe that inhabited Jerusalem, called Jebus before the conquest initiated by Joshua. Jerusalem was originally called Jebus, YEBUS H2982 – yᵊḇûs, which means “threshing place”. Judges 19:10, “But the man would not stay that night. And he arose and left, and came to a place opposite Jebus, that is Jerusalem.”
Now the name Jerusalem is actually two words, YARA (Jeru) and SALAM (Shalom). YARA H3384 – yārâ means teaching or teacher (we mentioned this word before in Exodus 35-38 (click here to read). It means to shoot (an arrow), sow (a seed), pour (water), etc.. Have a look at the word and how it is used in Scripture. The second word is SALAM H7999 – šālam, meaning Shalom like we know it, Peace. However it also means to pay or reward, render or restore, perform good, restitution, finished.
