Judges: Deborah
Judges 4:4-5 “And Deḇorah, a prophetess, the wife of Lappiḏoth, was ruling Yisra’ĕl at that time. And she was dwelling under the palm tree of Deḇorah between Ramah and Bĕyth Ěl in the mountains of Ephrayim. And the children of Yisra’ĕl came up to her for right-ruling.”
Deborahs’ name H1683 – dᵊḇôrâ means “bee“. The root word is DABAR H1696 – dāḇar, meaning to speak, talk, promise, commune, utter or command. Deborah is described as a powerful leader, inspiring courage in the face of adversity. She and Barak, the commander of the Israelite army, led the Israelites to victory against the oppressive Canaanites.
The Song of Deborah is found in Judges 5:2–31 and is a victory hymn, sung by Deborah and Barak.
Judges: Gideon
Judges 6:11-12, 15-16 ” while his son Giḏ‛on threshed wheat in the winepress, to hide it from the eyes of the Miḏyanites. And the Messenger of YHWH appeared to him, and said to him, “YHWH is with you, you mighty brave one!””, “And he said to Him, “O YHWH, with what do I save Yisra’ĕl? See, my clan is the weakest in Menashsheh, and I am the least in my father’s house. And YHWH said to him, “Because I am with you, you shall smite the Miḏyanites as one man.”
Gideons’ name H1439 – giḏʿôn means “hewer“, a cutter, like someone who cuts stones or wood. He was given two other names as well. Jerubbaal H3378 – yᵊrubaʿal appears in Judges 6:32 and is explained as meaning “Let Baal contend against him,” referencing Gideon’s act of destroying Baal’s altar. Jerubbesheth is mentioned in 2 Samuel 11:21. Both name begins with Jerub H7378 – rîḇ, meaning to strive, content or plead with. Baal is obviously the false god. Besheth H1322 – bšeṯ means shame or confusion. Besheth is also use in Saul’s son Ish-bosheth and grandson Mephibosheth.
Shalom
Judges 6:24 “And Gideon built an altar there to YHWH, and called it: YHWH Shalom.”
The Hebrew word Shalom H7965 – šālôm means Peace, Safety, Completeness, soundness, welfare, health, friendship, reward/pay/render/restore goodness. In modern Hebrew, shalom is used as both a greeting (“hello”) and a farewell (“goodbye”).
Psalm 34:14, “Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, H7965 and pursue it.”
Psalm 37:11, “But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace. H7965″
