Gold

Gold in Hebrew is ZAHAB H2091 – zāhāḇ, and in Greek is CHRYSION G5553 – chrysion. Gold is a precious metal, highly valued for its rarity, beauty, and utility. It holds significant importance throughout the Bible, symbolizing wealth, purity, and divine glory. Its mention in Scripture spans from Genesis to Revelation, reflecting its enduring value and symbolic meaning in biblical times. Some of the references and symbolism in Scripture include:

  • Gen 2:11, One of the four rivers from Eden was “Pishon; it winds through the entire land of Havilah, where there is gold.”
  • Gen 13:2 Abraham was rich in livestock, silver and gold
  • Exo 25-40 Use of gold in the Tabernacle
  • Exo 32 Use, Make and Worship of the golden calf
  • 1 Kings 6 Use of gold in the Temple
  • Job 23:10 Job’s testing times compared with refinement and purity of gold
  • Dan 2:38 the Babylonian Empire is spoken of as a “head of gold” because of its great riches; and Babylon was called by Isaiah (14:4) the “golden city”
  • 1 Peter 1:7 your faith will be tested like gold
  • 1 Peter 3:3 addressing outer beauty, “Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewellery, or the clothing you wear”
  • Matt 2:11 Magi bringing gifts to Yeshua, one of which was gold
  • Rev 17:4 The woman with the beast “glittering with gold, precious stones and pearls. She held a golden cup in her hand, filled with abominable things and the filth of her adulteries”
  • Rev 21:21 The new heaven, “The street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass.”

Clearly gold are used in both good and bad in Scripture references. And it is like no other commodity and has held the fascination of human societies since the beginning of recorded time. Empires and kingdoms were built and destroyed over gold. As societies developed, gold was universally accepted as a form of payment. In short, history has given gold a power surpassing that of any other commodity on the planet, and that power has never really disappeared. During most of history, a nation’s gold reserves were considered its key financial asset and a major prize of war.

But from old to new testament, we see important figures, even Solomon himself, Job to Yeshua to Peter, reminding us where our focus should be. There is nothing wrong with gold, as a matter of a fact, there are amazing symbolism and features of gold that makes it so sought-after. Yeshua spoke to the rich man who search for YHWH with all his heart, and said the following in Mark 10:21 Looking at the man, Yeshua felt genuine love for him. “There is still one thing you haven’t done,” he told him. “Go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

  • Job 23:10 But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold. H2091
  • Psa 19:10 More H2091 to be desired are they than gold, H2091 yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.
  • Psa 119:72 The law of thy mouth is better unto me than thousands of gold H2091 and silver.
  • Pro 20:15 There is gold, H2091 and a multitude of rubies: but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.
  • Pro 22:1 A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold. H2091
