Leprosy
2 Kings 5: 27 Therefore the leprosy of Naaman shall cling to you
In Leviticus 13 (click here to read more) we read about Leprosy, a special skin condition that is usually associated with some action or spiritual reason, like Mirriam in Numbers 12 that were gossipping about Moses.
Here we see Gehazi being overwhelmed with greed, and then to top it off he lies about taking the silver and garments.
Greed
2 Kings 5:16,20,25 But he said, “As YHWH lives, before whom I stand, I will receive nothing.” And he urged him to take it, but he refused… But Gehazi, the servant of Elisha the man of Elohim, said, “.. I will run after him and take something from him.” .. Elisha said to him, “Where did you go, Gehazi?” And he said, “Your servant did not go anywhere.”
Gehazi’s name in Hebrew, H1522 – gêḥăzî, are two Hebrew words together, GAY + HAZA, translated together as “valley of vision“. The word GAY H1516 – gay means a deep valley or narrow gorge. The word HAZA H2372 – ḥāzâ means to see, to prophesy, to have understanding.
But the name Gehazi, valley of vision, is actually an oxymoron. You cannot have vision when you are down in the gorge or valley. Gehazi was suppose to have understanding and vision, he was Elisha’s servant. He was right there to experience the miracles and teachings. He should have had vision, to know they are always taken care of by YHWH – they don’t need people’s money.
The greed for money and things was a trap. It is a big trap still today, for so many people who are given the privilege of vision, of being a prophet, of doing miracles and serving people. Then they see the money and fall into the same gorge.
“The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil” (1 Timothy 6:10), and “you cannot serve both Elohim and money” (Luke 16:13). After years of seemingly faithful service, Gehazi fell. His sin began in the heart, as he coveted what Naaman was offering. Other sins soon followed in a series of lies.
