Strike on cheek
6:29 “To him who strikes you on the one cheek, offer the other also. And from him who takes away your cloak, do not withhold your tunic either.”
Here in Luke 6 we find a condensed version of the Beautitudes found in Matthew 5. These laws that Yeshua is talking about is in both Exodus 21 (click here to read more) and Leviticus. Back then when we studied the laws, it became clear that this law with someone slapping you, or an eye for an eye, or taking your cloak was a means of punishment for a sin committed. In other words, if you were accussed, and found guilty, you had to pay the same measure that you caused pain on others.
But here, Yeshua is taking it one further. He says if someone accusses you and demands something from you, whether the accussations are true or false, give and give anyways. Give even twice as much. The Torah laws is about bringing balance, restoration, teaching fairness. But Yeshua says, you can only benefit if you give more than what is required. Why, in verse 38 He says, “Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.”
Verse 35, “But love your enemies, do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High. For He is kind to the unthankful and evil.”
