Ancestor and Family Traditions
Malachi 3:7 “Since the time of your ancestors you have turned away from my laws and have not followed them. Return to Me, and I will return to you,” says YHWH Tsebaoth
Back in Jeremiah 30 we learned that there is no such word as “ancestor” in Hebrew (click here to read more). The actual word in Hebrew says, “Yet from the days of your fathers”. Being born into a family religion and tradition, usually is the basis for people to believe in that religion so much, that when they hear a different version of their religion than the one they grew up with, it just feels all wrong to them.
But what is surprising, is that YHWH repeats this over and over.. “you have been taught in your ancestors’ ways”. Psalm 45:10 says, “Forget your own people also, and your father’s house“. Yeshua says in Matthew 10:37, “He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.” And in Matthew 23:9, where Yeshua says, “And do not call anyone on earth your father, for you have one Father, who is in heaven”. This does not mean you should write off your family, or not have respect for your parents. This is about your Spirit. Your biological father will always be your father. But who is your spiritual Father?
When confronted with a different view of the religion we were brought up, people often think, their father and grandfather were so genuine in their belief and faith towards God – how can that be wrong? How do you turn and change the family traditions, without having your family turn against you? It is a choice that only you can make. And Yeshua also said, we are not to judge. Only YHWH can judge our fathers and grandfathers, and us.. and He is a very Merciful Elohim. But remember the road is narrow, and Yeshua does give a call that people should leave their family traditions behind. Here the old testament ends before Yeshua is to be born, and YHWH says in Malachi 3:7 “Return to me, and I will return to you”. If you are looking for the Truth, the Way, just keep on searching, asking and knocking on the doors of heaven for answers.. Yeshua says in Matthew 7:7, “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.”
Here in Malachi 3:7, together with the word Laws (Torah in Hebrew), YHWH says “Return to Me”. This word “return” in Hebrew is Teshuvah H7725 – šûḇ, which in western english terms we would call “Repentance”. But it is not just “saying sorry”.. it is with Changing your Ways – How you Think – How you were Brought up in Family Traditions. Click here for previous posts on the actual meaning of “Repentance”
Day of Fire and Elijah
Malachi 4:5 “Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet Before the coming of the great and dreadful day of YHWH.”
Translators use the word “The day of the Lord”, which in Hebrew is YHWH’s Day. And it is not a nice day to look forward too… the old testament is full of Scriptures on this day, click here for some of our previous post’s about it, to explain more. The role of the prophets, as explained in 2 Chronicles 24 is to warn and prepare people for the end times, and for the day of Judgement (click here to read more). Elijah is seen as the main prophet that represents all prophetic warnings, and Moses represents the Law. Moses and Elijah is also symbolized as the two Witnesses and Olive trees, as explained in Zechariah 4’s post.
Here in the very last prophet of the old testament, before Yeshua arrives, YHWH reminds us that there will be a dreadful day coming, the day of Judgement, the same day Yeshua warns us about. And then Elijah will return to warn the people yet again.
