Prophets

2 Chronicles 24:19 “Yet he sent prophets to them, to bring them again unto YHWH; and they testified against them: but they would not give ear.”

In 2 Chronicles we have a few prophets mentioned, Samuel, Nathan, Shemaiah, Iddo, Oded, Micaiah, Isaiah and Jeremiah.  The Hebrew word for prophet is Nabi H5030 – nāḇî’, also meaning spokesperson.  The root Hebrew word is Naba H5012 – nāḇā’, meaning prophesy, under the influence of divine spirit, to pour words out abundantly, speak with great enthusiasm or passion, divine emotion of mind

Many prophets were sent, and we don’t even know all of them or their names.  Many of these prophets we don’t have scrolls of.  In the old testament 63 prophets are mentioned, 7 of which were prophetesses, and in the new testament 25 prophets are referenced or mentioned.  But many of these prophets were killed also.  A famous statement by Yeshua in Matthew 23:37,”O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!”

Some of the prophets killed are:

  • Zechariah ben Jehoiada: He was a priest who rebuked King Joash for abandoning the worship of YHWH. In response, Joash ordered him to be stoned to death in the temple courtyard.
  • Obadiah helping 100 prophets: In 1 Kings 18:4 it says that Jezebel destroyed the prophets of YHWH, Obadiah took a hundred prophets and hid them by fifties in a cave, and provided them with bread and water.
  • Ezekiel: This great prophet is said to have died in Babylonia where “the leader of the Israelite exiles” killed him after being reproved for worshiping of idols. Ezekiel was reportedly buried in the grave of Shem, after which the Tomb of the Patriarchs in Hebron was modeled. The text also preserves an alternate tradition that Ezekiel was killed by an unidentified member of either the tribe of Dan or Gad, who had blamed him for cursing their children and flocks.
  • Amos: This northern prophet was tortured severely by Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, against whom Amos had prophesied. He was then mortally wounded with a club by Amaziah’s son. Amos was able to make his way back to his own district of Tekoa, where he soon died and was buried there.
  • Uriah: King Jehoiakim had Uriah killed for prophesying against Jerusalem and Judah, and had his body thrown into a common burial ground
  • Isaiah: said to be of Jerusalem, suffered martyrdom by being sawn in two by Manasseh (in agreement with the Martyrdom of Isaiah), buried near a place usually identified by scholars as the Pool of Siloam.
  • Micah: he suffered martyrdom by Jehoram
