Timeline confusion/contradictions, Translation Issues
Mark 14:12-14 “Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they killed the Passover lamb, His disciples said to Him, “Where do You want us to go and prepare, that You may eat the Passover?” And He sent out two of His disciples .. ‘The Teacher says, “Where is the guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?” ’”
Back in the post of Mark 10, we explained who exactly was Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Only Matthew and John were disciples that knew Yeshua personally. We also touched on the purposes of the letters written by them, and how they are basically copies written of each other. The letter from Mark was actually the original, and copied by Matthew and Luke, however over 220 verses were added to them, that is not in Mark. Also, for every letter/book, there are hundreds to thousands of manuscripts found, and they are not all the same. In other words, for example for the letter of Matthew alone, there are over a thousand manuscripts that were found, in mostly greek, but also in Hebrew and other languages. So what the bible translators do, they will choose a variation of a manuscript, or couple of manuscripts, to make their own translation, as bible translators are not allowed to copy exactly from another translator (due to copyrights), so they have to make it different enough to create their own “copy-right“. That is why today, just in English, we have over a thousand different bible versions or translations. Most translations are from the greek versions of manuscripts, and it is assumed there are no Hebrew manuscripts for the first 4 gospels of the new testament, which is actually incorrect! The Hebrew manuscripts do exist, and we have proof of them from copies kept in the Vatican.
Now with regard to the Timeline confusion between the Last supper of Yeshua until His Resurrection, comes from issues with the Translations. With Johns’ letter, he seems to put a lot more detail down, where the other gospels give more an overview of events. They don’t explain or use full termanology, because like with Matthew the letter is written with the Jews in mind, so he doesn’t have to explain termanology, and Luke is written for the Romans in mind, and they probably don’t need the details.
Matthew, Mark and Luke have it written that Yeshua’s meal was the Last Supper. For example Matthew 26:17, “Now on the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Yeshua, saying to Him, “Where do You want us to prepare for You to eat the Passover?””. However according to John, when Yeshua was arrested the Passover meals have not yet been eaten, in John 18:28 “Then they led Yeshua from Caiaphas to the Praetorium, and it was early morning. But they themselves did not go into the Praetorium, lest they should be defiled, but that they might eat the Passover.”
From our post in Matthew 27 we explained the different termanology, like John mentions a “High Sabbath“, which is different to normal “Sabbaths”. This is also where John differs with the other gospels. There is also the terms “Preparation Day” that is explained, with a picture with the most probably Timeline of 3 days and 3 nights, given in the post from Matthew 27. If one wants to understand the 3 days and 3 nights, it is important to understand how these festivals work. They are NOT complicated, but have been made to seem difficult to understand, because of the many translations.
According to John, the Passover and Festival of Unleavened Bread did not yet start until Yeshua’s crucifixion, which is also confirmed from what the Pharisees planned in Matthew 26:2, “You know that after two days is the Passover, and the Son of Man will be delivered up to be crucified..Then the chief priests, the scribes,[fn] and the elders of the people assembled at the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, and plotted to take Yeshua by trickery and kill Him. But they said, “Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar among the people.””
The purpose of this post is not to confuse even more, but to help understand the question about the 3 Days and 3 Nights Prophecy, for those who seek to understand it. The second purpose of this post is that people should take note there are differences among the gospels, and that is the cause of confusion – not because the old testament and YHWH’s Laws are difficult. Like Yeshua said, YHWH’s Laws are easy and easy to understand, but the Pharisees and scribes (and translators) add to it and make it difficult. When it comes to Truth, the source is in the Torah, the old Testament Laws and Prophets. All other letters and writings after Yeshua is about the Source and Truth, but should not be taken AS the source and truth. The new testament is there to point to Yeshua and the Torah of the old testament. So if the pointer is showing back to the Source, the old testament, the beginning, that is where one should start to read the Bible to get Truth and Understanding. Matthew 7:7: “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you”.
Wine and Bread
Mark 14:22,24 “And as they were eating, Yeshua took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.”.. And He said to them, “This is My blood of the covenant, which is shed for many.”
It is interesting that John’s letter doesn’t give this version of the Last Supper, except all the other details from the Last Supper, the conversations and prayers, all together in 5 Chapters! John 13:1 says, before the Passover festival.. while the Supper was taking place”. Then from John 13 it tells about the washing of the feet, Yeshua explaining who will betray Him, warning Peter about the rooster crow. John 14 He explains the Holy Spirit. John 15 He gives a whole chapter on being the True Vine – which is fitting for the Wine of the Last Supper. John 16 He gives the disciples more motivation, and John 17 is the Prayer for Himself, the disciples and the believers to come. That is : John 13-17 about the Last Supper.
An interesting note is the Last Supper from Luke 22, also have this command added in verse 19, “do this in remembrance of Me“. Did you know that this is also commanded from YHWH when the Israelites have their Passover Meal every year, to tell the story of Exodus to their children? In Exodus 12 and 13 it is mentioned, for example 13:8, “And you shall tell your son in that day, saying, ‘This is done because of what YHWH did for me when I came up from Egypt.’” These chapters also explain the Bread – the Unleavened Bread, which is the festival the Pharisees were talking about, the Festival of Unleavened Bread which is held WITH the Passover.
Meaning of Passover (blood)
Passover is all about the BLOOD – during the day a perfect lamb is to be slaughtered, it’s blood removed and put on wooden posts as a sign of the covenant between the people and YHWH. That night the lamb is eaten, and no leftovers of the meal is allowed the next day. Anything left must be burned (a sign of burial).
Meaning of Unleavened Bread
The bread is to have no Leaven/Yeast, and is a Festival of 7 days. See the post from Matthew 7 where we explained what the purpose and meaning is of the “leaven” vs. “unleaven”. Yeshua regularly also teaches about the “leaven”. During the Exodus of the Israelites, they were fed Manna, which is a form of unleavened bread also. See the post from Joshua 5 about the Manna and Unleavened bread, and how the Manna stopped once the Israelites entered the Promised Land. YHWH makes another reference to the “MOUTH“, with the Unleavened Bread in Exodus 13:9-10, comparing it with the Law/Word of YHWH to be the bread, to be in the mouth. It says, “It shall be as a sign to you on your hand and as a memorial between your eyes, that YHWH’s law may be in your mouth; for with a strong hand YHWH has brought you out of Egypt. You shall therefore keep this ordinance in its season from year to year.”
To “keep this ordinance in its season” means to keep the Passover AND Unleavened Bread each year, which is a Sign between our eyes that we belong to YHWH. Yeshua even quoted YHWH from Deuteronomy 8:3, “I fed you with manna which you did not know nor did your fathers know, that He might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone; but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of YHWH.” For more on the Sign of YHWH, click here for the post from Ezekiel 20.
