Drinking & Gluttony
Proverbs 23:21 “For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.”
The Hebrew word for drunkard is H5433 – sāḇā’, and for glutton is H2151 – zālal. The word for glutton means to overindulge and make little of something, make the act insignificant. To be lavish with food or drink, and in doing so become morally loose. Proverbs 28:7 says, “Whoso keepeth the law is a wise son: but he that is a companion of gluttons H2151 shameth his father.” Another hebrew word for drunk or intoxicated is H7937 – šāḵar, meaning causing yourself to drink, to enjoy being tipsy, be filled with, being merry. The Greek word is G3184 – methyō, meaning being intoxicated or slowly coming under the influence without knowing, and also used for metaphors of being part of group of people who shed blood and loose themselves.
- Genesis 9:20-26 – “And he (Noah) drank of the wine, and was drunken; H7937 and he was uncovered within his tent.”
- Genesis 19:30-38 – “Come, let us make our father (Lot) drink wine, and we will lie with him“
- Leviticus 10:9-11 – “Do not drink wine nor strong drink, thou, nor thy sons with thee, when ye go into the tabernacle of the congregation”
- Numbers 6:3 – When someone wants to make a nazarite vow (even if for short while) – “He shall separate himself from wine and strong drink, and shall drink no vinegar of wine, or vinegar of strong drink, neither shall he drink any liquor of grapes, nor eat moist grapes, or dried.”
- Deuteronomy 21:20 – “And they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton, and a drunkard.” – children who drink often become rebellious and unrespectful to their parents.
- Deuteronomy 29:5-6 – Israel for 40 years led by YHWH – “And I have led you forty years in the wilderness: your clothes are not waxen old upon you, and thy shoe is not waxen old upon thy foot. Ye have not eaten bread, neither have ye drunk wine or strong drink: that ye might know that I am YHWH your Elohim.”
- Deuteronomy 32:32-33 – “For their vine is of the vine of Sodom, and of the fields of Gomorrah: their grapes are grapes of gall, their clusters are bitter: Their wine is the poison of dragons, and the cruel venom of asps.”
- Judges 13:4, 7, 14 – Samson was to be a Nazarite for life. His mother was told not to drink wine or strong drink.
- 1 Samuel 1:14-15 – “And Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul before YHWH”
- 1 Samuel 25:32-38 – Nabal died after a drunken spree.
- 2 Samuel 11:13 – By getting Uriah drunk, David hoped to cover his sin.
- 2 Samuel 13:28-29 – Amnon was drunk when he was killed.
- 1 Kings 16:8-10 – The king was drinking himself into drunkenness when he was assassinated
- 1 Kings 20:12-21 – Ben-Hadad and 32 other kings were drinking when they were attacked and defeated by the Israelites.
- Esther 1:5-12 – The king gave each one all the drink he wanted. The king was intoxicated when he commanded the queen to come.
- Psalm 75:8 – “For in the hand of YHWH there is a cup, and the wine is red; it is full of mixture; and he poureth out of the same: but the dregs thereof, all the wicked of the earth shall wring them out, and drink them.”
- Proverbs 4:17 – “For they eat the bread of wickedness, and drink the wine of violence.”
- Proverbs 20:1 – “Liquor makes them noisy, and everyone under it’s influence is unwise”
- Proverbs 23:19-20 – “Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thine heart in the way. Do not associate with those who drink too much wine, and those who eat too much meat”
- Proverbs 23:21 – “drunks and gluttons will become poor. Drowsiness will dress them in rags”
- Proverbs 23:29-33 – “who has trouble, misery, quarrels, complaints, strange wounds and bloodshot eyes? Those who drink glass after glass of wine and mix it with everything. Do not look at wine because it is red, because it sparkles in the cup, because it goes down smoothly. Later it bites like a snake and strikes like a poisonous snake. Your eyes will see strange sights, and your mouth will say embarrassing things.”
- Proverbs 23:35 – “whenever I wake up, I’m going to look for another drink“
- Proverb 31:4-6 – “it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink: Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted. Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts.”
- Ecclesiastes 2:3-11 – “I sought in mine heart to give myself unto wine ..I planted me vineyards: ..Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do: and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun.”
- Ecclesiastes 10:17 – “Blessed art thou, O land, when thy king is the son of nobles, and thy princes eat in due season, for strength, and not for drunkenness!”
- Isaiah 5:11-12 – “Woe unto them that rise up early in the morning, that they may follow strong drink; that continue until night, till wine inflame them!”
- Isaiah 5:22 – “Woe unto them that are mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mingle strong drink:”
- Isaiah 19:14 – “as a drunken man staggereth in his vomit“
- Isaiah 22:12-13 – “And in that day did the Lord GOD of hosts call to weeping, and to mourning, and to baldness, and to girding with sackcloth: And behold joy and gladness, slaying oxen, and killing sheep, eating flesh, and drinking wine: let us eat and drink; for to morrow we shall die. And it was revealed in mine ears by YHWH of hosts, Surely this iniquity shall not be purged from you till ye die, saith YHWH Elohim of hosts.”
- Isaiah 24:9 – “They shall not drink wine with a song; strong drink shall be bitter to them that drink it.”
- Isaiah 28:1-3 – “Woe to the crown of pride, to the drunkards of Ephraim, whose glorious beauty is a fading flower, which are on the head of the fat valleys of them that are overcome with wine!”
- Isaiah 28:7-8 – “But they also have erred through wine, and through strong drink are out of the way; the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink, they are swallowed up of wine, they are out of the way through strong drink; they err in vision, they stumble in judgment. For all tables are full of vomit and filthiness, so that there is no place clean.”
- Isaiah 56:9-12 – “Come ye, say they, I will fetch wine, and we will fill ourselves with strong drink; and to morrow shall be as this day, and much more abundant.”
- Isaiah 63:6 “And I will tread down the people in mine anger, and make them drunk H7937 in my fury, and I will bring down their strength to the earth.”
- Jeremiah 25:27 “Therefore thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith YHWH of hosts, the Elohim of Israel; Drink ye, and be drunken, H7937 and spue, and fall, and rise no more, because of the sword which I will send among you.”
- Jeremiah 35:2-14 – The Rechabites drank no grape juice or intoxicating wine and were blessed.
- Jeremiah 51:7 “Babylon hath been a golden cup in YHWH’s hand, that made H7937 all the earth drunken: H7937 the nations have drunken of her wine; therefore the nations are mad.”
- Ezekiel 44:21 – “Neither shall any priest drink wine, when they enter into the inner court.”
- Daniel 1:5-17 – Daniel refused the king’s intoxicating wine and was blessed for it along with his abstaining friends.
- Daniel 5 – YHWH shows up while people drink, writing on the wall! “They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone.”
- Hosea 4:11 – “Whoredom and wine and new wine take away the heart.”
- Hosea 7:5 – “In the day of our king the princes have made him sick with bottles of wine; he stretched out his hand with scorners.”
- Joel 1:5 – “Awake, ye drunkards, and weep; and howl, all ye drinkers of wine, because of the new wine; for it is cut off from your mouth.”
- Joel 3:3 – “And they have cast lots for my people; and have given a boy for an harlot, and sold a girl for wine, that they might drink.”
- Amos 2:8 – “And they lay themselves down upon clothes laid to pledge by every altar, and they drink the wine of the condemned in the house of their god.”
- Amos 2:12 – Israel is condemned for forcing Nazarites to drink wine, “But ye gave the Nazarites wine to drink”
- Micah 2:11 – “If a man walking in the spirit and falsehood do lie, saying, I will prophesy unto thee of wine and of strong drink; he shall even be the prophet of this people.”
- Nahum 1:10 – “and while they are drunken as drunkards, they shall be devoured as stubble fully dry.”
- Habakkuk 2:5 – “Yea also, because he transgresseth by wine, he is a proud man, neither keepeth at home, who enlargeth his desire as hell, and is as death, and cannot be satisfied“
- Habakkuk 2:15-16 “Woe unto him that giveth his neighbour drink, that puttest thy bottle to him, and makest him drunken also, that thou mayest look on their nakedness! Thou art filled with shame for glory: drink thou also, and let thy foreskin be uncovered: the cup of YHWH’s right hand shall be turned unto thee, and shameful spewing shall be on thy glory.”
- Haggai 1:6 “Ye have sown much, and bring in little; ye eat, but ye have not enough; ye drink, but ye are not filled with drink; H7937 ye clothe you, but there is none warm; and he that earneth wages earneth wages to put it into a bag with holes.”
- Matthew 24:49-51 ” eat and drink with the drunkards, the master of that servant will come on a day when he is not looking for him and at an hour that he is not aware of, and will cut him in two and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites. There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
- Luke 1:15 – John the Baptist : “For he shall be great in the sight of YHWH, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother’s womb.”
- Luke 21:34 – “And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares. For as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth.”
- 1 Peter 4:3-7 – “For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries: .. that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to YHWH in the spirit. - Revelation 17:1-2 “And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters: With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication.”
