Lying
Proverbs 19:5 “he that speaks lies shall not escape“
In Hebrew there are a few words that draw the meaning of lies and deceiving:
H8267 – šeqer / H8266 – šāqar : lie, deception, disappointment, falsehood, wrong, vain, trick, cheat, fail
H205 – ‘āven : trouble, sorrow, wicked, vanity, mischief, unrighteous, false
H4820 – mirmâ : deceit, subtle, treachery
H3576 – kāzaḇ / H3577 – kāzāḇ : lie, fail, deceive, disappoint, falsehood, deceptive
In Genesis 3:1 we read “Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field”, and Yeshua says in John 8:44, “the devil,.. he was a murderer from the beginning, and has nothing to do with the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks according to his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” In Revelation we read again, that the devils’ main purpose and drive is deception and lies, in Chapter 20:3 “He threw him into the Abyss, and locked and sealed it over him, to keep him from deceiving the nations anymore until the thousand years were ended”, and verse 7-8, “7 When the thousand years are over, Satan will be released from his prison and will go out to deceive the nations in the four corners of the earth”.
Lying and deception is listed as one of the 7 big sins which YHWH hates, Proverbs 6:16-17 “These six matters YHWH hates, and seven are an abomination to Him .. a lying tongue..”. And YHWH even listed it as one of the 10 commandments in Exodus 20:16 “Thou shalt not bear false H8267 witness against thy neighbour.”
But we have seen how even the best persons in Scriptures can fail at this one thing, that seems so “little”.. Abraham and Sarah both, Jacob deceiving his father Isaac, Jacobs’ sons lying to him about Joseph, Joseph deceiving his bothers, Rahab to protect the spies, David, the midwives in Egypt to protect the babies, just to name a few! At the end of the day, walking into the trap of lying, can cause you to lie even more. Yeshua said in Luke 8:17, “For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be known or brought out into the open.” If you have nothing to hide, then the light will bring you joy and relief – but if you have something to hide, you will be terrified waiting for the truth to come out. Proverbs 22:15-16 “When justice is done, a righteous person is delighted, but troublemakers are terrified. A person who wanders from the way of wise behaviour will rest in the assembly of the dead”.
Coming clean is not easy, but necessary – as it is a Test of the Heart, the motives that Proverbs also mention in many places, but for example in Proverbs 16:2 states, “All a person’s ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by YHWH“.
