Pride
Proverbs 27:1-2 “Do not brag.. Praise should come from others, not from your own mouth, from a stranger and not from your own lips“
Proverbs 27:21 “a person is tested by the praise given to him”
Proverbs 28:26 “whoever trusts his own heart is a fool“
Proverbs 29:23 “A person’s pride will humiliate him”
Proverbs 30:13 speaks about a generation characterized by pride, describing them as having “lofty eyes” and “lifted eyelids”, “There is a generation, O how lofty are their eyes! and their eyelids are lifted up.”
Isaiah 14:12-15 describes ha-satan’s ambition to elevate his throne above YHWH, saying, “I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of YHWH… I will be like the Most High”, which indicates that satan’s pride was a significant factor in his fall from heaven. Back in Job 26 (click here to read more), it talks about destroying the sea monster called Rahab, the demonic angel of the sea. Where Rahab H7293 – rahaḇ means pride.
Proverbs 16:18 says, “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.” This is why YHWH mentions it over and over throughout Scripture – He hates pride! In Proverbs 6’s post (click here to read more), we read about the 7 things YHWH hates, of which the first one is Arrogance. The Hebrew word is rum H7311 – rûm – arrogance, lifting yourself up, haughty. This word RUM, is the same word in Proverbs 30:13 quoted above, “There is a generation, O how lofty H7311 are their eyes! and their eyelids are lifted up.”
The other Hebrew words that are used in these verses for pride are:
H1984 – hālal / H4110 – mahălāl – boastful, praising, foolish
H982 – bāṭaḥ – confident, trust in, bold
H1346 – ga’ăvâ – pride, haughty, arrogant, swelling up, majesty, rising up against
