Idols, Blind and Deaf

Psalm 115:4-8 “Their idols are silver and gold, The work of men’s hands. They have mouths, but they do not speak; Eyes they have, but they do not see; They have ears, but they do not hear; Noses they have, but they do not smell; They have hands, but they do not handle; Feet they have, but they do not walk; Nor do they mutter through their throat.
Those who make them are like them; So is everyone who trusts in them.”

These verses are identical to Psalm 135:15-18. Isaiah 44:9-20 also speak of how idolatry literally can affect you, in verse 19, “They do not know nor understand; For He has shut their eyes, so that they cannot see, and their hearts, so that they cannot understand.” Like the Psalmist says, they become like their idols. Try to explain to the rich and wealthy about the Kingdom of YHWH and His Torah – you will literally get blank stares. It might be hard to think in terms of what idols do we have.. but going back to Psalm 1, with the Company we keep (click here to read more) – we literally become like the people or the things we spend your time with. If we take our eyes of the world and place it squarely on YHWH, and we walk (do/follow) His Torah, it will become a light to us and the Truth (yesterday’s post, click here to read more) will be revealed. But until then, we are blinded and deceived by the world.

Idols in hebrew is H6091 – ʿāṣāḇ, meaning anything that resembles an image that you can look upon to remind you of something, or something that is so appealing to you that draws you in, like beauty or riches. It means something to labour your time and energy in, to make (form/fashion) something earthly that you can look upon, behold, with your soul/spirit. Even the word “doll“, comes from the word “gift” made into a model of a human figure. One could really ask, what is my “I”-doll?

Exodus 20:3-6 “Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth, Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I YHWH thy Elohim am a jealous Elohim, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.”

Psalm 119:18 “Uncover my eyes so that I may see the miraculous things in your Torah/Laws”
