In 2 Sam 5:14 we see Nathan being an older brother of Solomon, son of David, born in Jerusalem. In Chapter 7 we read about the prophet Nathan, it is not the same person, as the sons Nathan and Solomon will only be born later with Bathsheba as their mother (2 Samuel 12).

But the Prophet Nathan was a trusted advisor to King David. Nathan H5416 – nāṯān means giver, coming from the root word H5414 – nāṯan meaning to set/bring/lay in place, like in Genesis 1:17 “And YHWH set H5414 them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth”

2 Sam 5:7,9 “Nevertheless David took the strong hold of Zion: H6726 the same is the city of David. .. Then David dwelt in the stronghold, and called it the City of David.”

This is the first place in Scripture that is referenced to Zion, H6726 – ṣîyôn. Zion means “parched place”, coming from H6723 – ṣîyâ meaning “wilderness, drought, solitary, barren“, and H6725 – ṣîyûn meaning a “title, signpost, monument, sign”

Zion is mostly referred to in Scripture as the City of David, and is referenced mostly in Psalms.

The prophets also prophesied about Yeshua’s coming in Zion like in Zec 9:9 “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; H6726 shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.”

Yeshua instructed the disciples to fetch the donkey for Him, saying in Matthew 21:4-5 “All this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, Tell ye the daughter of Sion (greek G4622), Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass.”

David said, 2 Sam 7:2 “See now, I am dwelling in a house of cedar, but the ark of Elohim dwells within curtains.” However, that night the Prophet Nathan had a Word from YHWH, saying YHWH is the One who builds the house, and that He is happy dwelling in the Tabernacle Tent. BUT, He said in verse 12-14 “When your days are filled and you rest with your fathers, I shall raise up your seed after you, who comes from your inward parts, and shall establish his reign. He does build a house for My Name, and I shall establish the throne of his reign forever. I am to be his Father, and he is My son.”

This is a prophecy of Yeshua, because the words says after David dies, a seed will come later.  We don’t see in the rest of 2 Samuel about David’s plans for the Temple, however in 1 Chronicles 22,28 and 29 there are much detail where David is putting a lot of effort in planning the Temple and setting up Solomon, as his life-work to build the Temple. This is a different scenario from where YHWH told Moses exactly how and what He wanted the Tabernacle to be. In Chronicles David mentions that YHWH showed him what He wanted, and that is all we have from that.

Later years, there are much criticism from several prophets like Malachi, Jeremiah and Ezekiel about the corruption of the temple. In Luke 21:5-6 we read how the people were admiring the Temple and the stones, when Yeshua said, “These that you see – the days are coming in which not one stone shall be left upon another that shall not be thrown down.” and in John 2:19 He said, “Destroy this Temple, and in three days I shall raise it.

Yeshua did not seem impressed by the Temple either. As matter of fact, in Revelations 21:22 we read that in the new Jerusalem, there will be no Temple, “And I saw no Temple in it, for YHWH Ěl Shaddai is its Dwelling Place, and the Lamb.”

There are much speculation on a Third Temple that needs to be rebuilt. The scriptures they usually reference are the following:

  • Daniel 9:24-27 Talking about Jerusalem (not the temple) being restored and rebuilt.
  • Ezekiel 40-44 Talking about the entire Jerusalem and the Mount that is sacred, the measurements and that which the Messiah will establish. The East Gate will be shut and only allowed for the Messiah. It does mention the temple, but cannot be in contradiction of Revelations 21:22. It talks about entrances and courtyards, and a place for those who live by the Torah.
  • Zechariah 1:12-17 The promise to return to Jerusalem and rebuild His House. A measuring line will be used to rebuild Jerusalem (probably referencing Ez 40-44).
  • Zechariah 6:12-15 This prophecy mentions the “Branch” (the Messiah) rebuilding and setting up the new home, palace or sanctuary (which most translators translate to “temple”).

There are no clear prophecy that a third temple will be build for Messiah to return. Instead all prophecies clearly state the Messiah will setup the new Kingdom and Home. Men might do and build things as “they want” it to be, but YHWH sets the rules for His Kingdom and we should not be afraid of men and their prophecies, but only look to YHWH and Yeshua for guidance and peace.
