Bride and Sister
Song of songs 5:1 “my sister, my spouse“
In the Song of Songs (or sometimes called Songs of Solomon), the text refers to his wife as his sister five times. The phrase “my sister, my bride” is not meant to be taken literally. It’s an expression of deep affection and intimacy, highlighting the close bond between the lovers. In ancient Near Eastern love poetry, it was common to use terms like “sister” and “brother” to denote closeness and affection. The phrase emphasizes the profound connection and intimacy shared between the two individuals.
The Hebrew word for Sister is Ahot H269 – ‘āḥôṯ : sister, but also could mean – half-sister, beloved, bride, another or together, brotherly-love, relative, kinship, same tribe, resemble each other, reciprocal relationship
The Hebrew word for Spouse is Kalla H3618 – kallâ : bride, but could also mean – daughter-in-law, made complete or perfect
