About Zechariah
Zechariah 1:1 “the word of YHWH came to Zechariah the son of Berechiah, the son of Iddo the prophet”
Typical of prophet names, Zechariah’s name have YHWH’s name in it: Yah. The rest of Zechariah H2148 – zᵊḵaryâ name is Zakar H2142 – zāḵar, meaning to remember, mention, bring to mind, call upon. Zechariah is not mentioned often as a book to read, however everyone knows the book of Revelation. But Zechariah also prophesied and had many visions in the very same fashion as John from Revelation.. coloured horses, horns, winds, stone with eyes, lamp stands, trees and flying scrolls, to name a few.
Zechariah’s visions come in a time when they are rebuilding Jerusalem and it’s Temple, in preparation for the Messiah, the King, Shepherd and Head Priest. Zechariah’s visions are for the Messiah to come, which was about 300 years later, and also visions for the end times and the final War, where the whole world will wage war against YHWH.
Joshua & Yeshua
Zechariah 3:9 “For behold, the stone that I have laid before Joshua: Upon the stone are seven eyes.”
When you read these prophecies, and it clearly sounds like it is about Yeshua, one might wonder, why is Joshua singled out – what is special about Joshua? Well – the answer is again, the translators.. Because actually this prophecy in Zechariah is so profound and incredible, he is prophesying about the Messiah by Name! The Hebrew word for Joshua is Yehoshua H3091 – yᵊhôšûaʿ – the same name for Yeshua, or the Greek Jesus. Go back to Numbers 13 (click here to read more) where the story begins with Kaleb and Joshua, and we posted and explained the profound name of “Joshua”!
In verse 8, He calls him the High Priest, “Hear, O Joshua, the high priest”, and the Servant the Branch, “For behold, I am bringing forth My Servant the BRANCH“. In the earlier verses he is dressed in dirty clothes, representing all the sins of men that was placed upon Him. Even Satan is there to accuse, but instead the Messiah is giving rich new clothes, a turban representing the High Priest as well as King. The stone represents the cornerstone, meaning He is the foundational and principal stone, with seven eyes representing the seven Spirits of YHWH. Click here for a post from Isaiah 11 explaining and listing the seven Spirits of YHWH.
Psa 118:22 “The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone.”
1 Peter 2:4-8 “Coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious, you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. Therefore it is also contained in the Scripture, “Behold, I lay in Zion
A chief cornerstone, elect, precious, And he who believes on Him will by no means be put to shame.” Therefore, to you who believe, He is precious; but to those who are disobedient, “The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone,” and “A stone of stumbling and a rock of offense.” They stumble, being disobedient to the word, to which they also were appointed.”
Seven Spirits of YHWH
Zechariah 4:10 “For these seven rejoice to see the plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel. They are the eyes of YHWH, Which scan to and fro throughout the whole earth.”
Two Olive Trees
Zechariah 4:11,14 “These are the two anointed ones, who stand beside YHWH of the whole earth.”
In Revelation 11:4 we also read about the two witnesses, also explained as the olive trees, “These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands standing before YHWH of the earth.”
In Matthew 17 we read in verses 2 and 3 that Yeshua went up a high mountain, and two people appeared with Him, “and He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light. And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him.” Moses representing the Law and Elijah the Prophets. Yeshua said in Matthew 5:17, “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill.” The Law and the Prophets serve as Witnesses.
In this verse in Zechariah, it is translated as the “anointed ones”, where “ones” is actually “sons” in Hebrew. And anointed in Hebrew here is Yishar H3323 – yiṣhār, meaning fresh oil, but also shining pure oil. Fresh oil glistening and being pressed, in the process of making new oil.
Four Horses
Zechariah 6:2,5 “With the first chariot were red horses, with the second chariot black horses, with the third chariot white horses, and with the fourth chariot dappled horses … And the angel answered and said to me, “These are four spirits of heaven, who go out from their station before YHWH of all the earth.”
In Revelation we also read about the four colored horses, chapter 6:1-8, “..a white horse. He who sat on it had a bow;..fiery red, .. and it was granted to the one who sat on it to take peace from the earth … a black horse, and he who sat on it had a pair of scales in his hand ..a pale horse. And the name of him who sat on it was Death..”
In Zechariah he only mentions the horses and chariots going into certain directions, while Revelation explains more about the judgement they bring with them.
