Temple Purpose, Sacrifices
2 Chronicles 2:6 “.. Who am I then, that I should build Him a House, except to offer before Him?
The end of 1 Chronicles (David’s end) and the beginning of 2 Chronicles (Solomon’s beginning) is a repeat of what was read in 2 Samuel, where we also talked about what Yeshua said about this Temple (click here to read more).
Leaving a grand temple in the hands of men, is only doomed for corruption. The temple started out as a place of lots of worship, but according to Solomon, the main and real reason really is a place to bring the sacrifices to (2 Chron 2:6). In Matthew 21:12-13 we read that the Temple was rather used as a “market place” for buying and selling, where Yeshua calls it a “den of robbers” and quoting Jeremiah 7:11 “Is this house, which is called by my name, become a den of robbers in your eyes?”. Yeshua then predicts the temple’s destruction in Mark 13:2 and John 2:19-21.
So what is the purpose then of the Temple? Yeshua said in John 4:23-24, that YHWH must be worshiped in Spirit and Truth – not in the flesh or in buildings on earth. The two main purposes of the Temple was worship and sacrifice – both which continue in our hearts, will, mind, soul and spirit.
Glory of YHWH
2 Chronicles 5:13-14 “..that then the house was filled with a cloud, even the house of YHWH; for the glory of YHWH had filled the house of Elohim”
In 2 Chronicles 5, the glory of YHWH refers to a visible manifestation of His presence, specifically a cloud. The Hebrew word for cloud is Anan H6051 – ʿānān, but the root word Anan H6049 – ʿānan means to observe something in the future, “observe time” as used in Deuteronomy 8:10 “There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, H6049 or an enchanter, or a witch”. It is forbidden to make a practice of it (divination, spirit practices).
But these clouds that are visible for all to see, are a manifestation of YHWH’s Glory. The clouds H6051 are mentioned first with the rainbow given by YHWH in the clouds in Genesis 9. And then again, where YHWH travels with Israel to the Promised land for 40 years in a cloud of fire at night, and a cloud by day in Exodus 13-14. The clouds (manifestation of YHWH’s Glory) are always mentioned when someone like Moses went up the mountain to meet with YHWH, or at the tabernacle.
