LEVI Meaning
LEVI means “to join”. The Hebrew word is H3878 – lēvî. The root word is H3867 – lāvâ : join/twine/unite/remain
Look at this beautiful promise from Isaiah 56:6
“Also the sons of the foreigner who join themselves (lava H3867) to YHVH, to serve Him, and to love the Name of YHVH, to be His servants, all who guard the Sabbath, and not profane it, and hold fast to My covenant – them I shall bring to My set-apart mountain, and let them rejoice in My house of prayer. Their burnt offerings and their slaughterings are accepted on My altar, for My house is called a house of prayer for all the peoples.”
Remember in our previous day studies, I’ve mentioned about being grafted into YHVHs’ covenant? There are still many more to come!
The 12 Tribes
So we are quickly backtracking to the previous chapter (29-30), where we have the 12 Tribes’ sons being born :
Gen 29:32-35 Leahs’ 1st four sons are born.
- Reuben : “For she said Yehovah has seen my affliction, for now, my husband will love me”. Reuben is two words: “re’u,” see, and “ben,” son. So literally “see a son,” and that’s connected to her saying that Yehovah has seen.
- Shimeon / Simeon : “For Yehovah heard that I was unloved”. Shimeon is from the word “shamah,” to hear; Yehovah heard.
- Levi : “This time my husband will join me for I gave birth to him three sons”. Levi is from the word “yelaveh,” he will join.
- Yehuda / Judah : “I will thank/praise Yehovah”. Yehuda is a combination of the words “odeh” and “Yehovah.” It’s actually both words, “Yeho’odeh,”
Gen 30:9-24
- Dan : “YHVH judged me and also heard my voice”. Dan means “he judged”.
- Naphtali : “The wrestlings of YHVH I have wrestled with my sister and also prevailed”, meaning “wrestlings of YHVH ”.
- Gad : “fortune has come”
- Asher : “I am blessed, for the daughters shall call me blessed”. The word asher it comes to the word “rejoice.”
- Issachar : “YHVH has given me my reward because I gave my maidservant to my husband”. Issachar in Hebrew, which comes from the word “sachar” “reward”.
- Zebulun : “Now my husband is going to dwell with me”. Therefore he is called Zvulun, “dwelling.”
- Joseph / Yosef : finally Rachel has her first son, and she says “Elohim has taken away my reproach”. Joseph has a double meaning. Assaf means “YHVH has gathered my reproach,” and the Yo(Yehovah) will add to me another son. So Yosef means Yehovah adds and also gathers.
- Benjamin : (still to come in later chapters) Ben means son in Hebrew, and Yamin is right hand – specifically as a symbol of strength. So the son of my right hand.
Interestingly Dina is also mentioned, but is not a tribe.
- Dina : no explanation is given on the meaning, but in Hebrew it is obvious. It comes from the word judgment. It’s actually the feminine of Dan.
IMPORTANT SCRIPTURES / PROPHECIES:
Gen 30:1 Multiple wifes And Rachael envied her sister. I verse 8 she says she has been wrestling with her sister Leah. Since Sarah, who gave her maid to Abraham – it is obvious time and again how multiple wifes are just not a good idea. But later in Scripture, we will see YHVH giving instructions that a man is not to marry two sisters at the same time.. and it could probably stem from Leah and Rachels’ wrestlings. |
