Study Gem : In the Desert
Numbers 1:1 (PART 1) “And יהוה spoke to Mosheh in the Wilderness of Sinai, in the Tent of Meeting, …”
In Hebrew, the names of books in the Tanakh (Hebrew Bible) are primarily derived from the first significant word or phrase of the book, such as Genesis in Hebrew is called “Bereshit” meaning “In the beginning”. Exodus is Shemot – meaning Names (referring to the names of the people in Israel). Leviticus is called Vayikra, meaning “And He called” (referring to YHWH calling Moses).
99% of people today would not consider reading a book called “Numbers”.. that sounds kinda boring. The Hebrew name is much more beautiful and intriguing.. it is called Bamidbar! Which means “In the wilderness” or the desert. The wilderness or desert in a persons’ life is very profound. That is the place where you truly meet with YHWH, where you receive your teaching, where you grow, and let go of your own fleshly desires. Remember before Yeshua started His ministry, He first spend 40 days in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11)
Numbers 1:1 (PART 2) “… on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they had come out of the land of Mitsrayim/Egypt”
If you quickly jump to Numbers 9:1-2 “And YHWH spoke to Mosheh in the Wilderness of Sinai, in the first month of the second year after they had come out of the land of Mitsrayim, saying, “Now, let the children of Yisrael perform the Passover at its appointed time”. This means that the stories in Scripture is not exactly in chronologic order. So Numbers 1 starts off right after the Israelites had their 2nd Passover since they came out of Egypt.
What is also interesting, is so far from Exodus 12 to Numbers 1 there has only been about 1 Year that has passed. A lot has happened in this last year. But the entire rest of the book of Numbers, will cover the rest of the 39 years in the Wilderness! Obviously a lot will happen in the Wilderness too.. but we won’t know all the details – only the highlighted parts that we need to know, was shared with us in the Scripture.
