About Obadiah
Obadiah 1:1 “The vision of Obadiah.”
The Hebrew name for Obadiah is H5662 – ʿōḇaḏyâ. Looking at the Hebrew name, one can see it is made of two words, Abad (H5647 – ʿāḇaḏ) and Yah (H3050 – yâ, which is short for Yehovah or YHWH). Abad means to serve, work or do.. so his name basically means servant of Yah, or to work for Yah.
There have been quite a few Obadiahs’ in Scripture: a couple of Levites, family of Saul, family of David, a gatekeeper in the time of Nehemiah, even a prince of Judah. But the majority of scholars date the Book of Obadiah to shortly after the fall of Jerusalem in 587 BC.
Edom/Esau
Obadiah 1:1 “Thus saith YHWH Elohim concerning Edom“
Edom was a mountain-dwelling nation whose founding father was Esau. We touched on Edom/Esau back in Genesis 25, and the meaning of Edom and Esau (click here to read more). In Scripture the names are used interchangeable.. Edom or Esau. Obadiah said that the high elevation of their dwelling place in the mountains of Seir had gone to their head, and they had puffed themselves up in pride. In verse 3-4, “‘The pride of your heart has deceived you, you who dwell in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high; You who say in your heart, ‘Who will bring me down to the ground?’ Though you ascend as high as the eagle, and though you set your nest among the stars, from there I will bring you down,”’ declares YHWH”.
In Psalm 137 we read about when Jerusalem is captured by Babylon, and he mentions Edom in verse 7, “Remember, YHWH, the children of Edom in the day of Jerusalem; who said, Rase it, rase it, even to the foundation thereof.” In other words, Edom was happy that Jerusalem was captured, who were their own brothers! They even went to loot Jerusalem themselves, and captured their brothers and sold them out.
Day of YHWH
Obadiah 1:15 “For the day of YHWH is near upon all the heathen: as thou hast done, it shall be done unto thee: thy reward shall return upon thine own head.”
The day of YHWH is about judgement, see our previous posts about the YHWH’s day (click here to read more). Today among most churches, the name of YHWH have been replaced by “The Lord”, and they teach that the “Lord’s Day” is Sunday. However that is not from anywhere in Scripture, and was instituted by man to change the Saturday Sabbath to Sunday, which was used by most cultures at the time to rest and worship their gods. So they changed to Sunday in an attempt to change from their gods to worshipping YHWH (called Lord). It was as a means of “transition” from one religion to another, but what they did was to remove YHWH’s name and change His Appointed Day to another day that suited men better. See another prophecy that was made about this change.. in Daniel 7:25 “And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws“. This is what the Roman Catholicism did, changes YHWH’s time of Sabbath, and removed Torah by saying laws are for the old testament and doesn’t apply for today.
However, YHWH’s day is about Judgement – YHWH’s Judgement on all people. Yeshua and Torah teaches that we are not to judge each other, but to leave judgement to YHWH, like Yeshua said in Matthew 7:12, “Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.”
