Mortal
Psalm 103:15 “As for man (H582) his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourish.” The word man is used in most translations, however man in Hebrew is Adam, where Adam also means mankind. However this word in Hebrew is Enos H582 – ‘ĕnôš, which is more a stronger or poetic form of mankind, referring to it’s mortal qualities. It is points to an “incurable” or desperate state, woeful – it has an end, a woe.
Job uses this version of man, mortal quite often. Job 4:17 “Shall mortal man H582 be more just than Elohim? shall a man be more pure than his maker?” Job 5:17 “Behold, happy is the man/mortal H582 whom Elohim corrects” Job 25:6 “How much less man, H582 that is a worm? and the son of man, which is a worm?” Job 32:8 “But there is a spirit in man/mortal: H582 and the inspiration of the Almighty give them understanding.”
David also uses mortal a lot (although translations use “man”). Psalm 8:4 “What is man/mortal, H582 that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visits him?” Psalm 9:20 “Put them in fear, O YHWH: that the nations may know themselves to be but mortal. H582 Selah.”
For those who look to YHWH, know that we have been given a time period in the body capsule that is woe’d, like a flower or grass that is here for a day, and then gone. But it is what we do in this time period, that determines the immortal, the eternal for each one of us. For those who do not look to YHWH, live in either despair or fear. One can see this in how people are desperate to extend their beauty and bodies capabilities, even looking at ways to truly be immortal in their bodies. The rich of the world spend their time and energy in biotechnology and drugs to eliminate cells that age, invest in gene and cellular therapies, getting blood transfusions from younger blood that have rejuvenating effects. Even cryonics which involves freezing people in hope for future medical advancements for revival. Perhaps there is some part of them that are so extremely rebellious to look at YHWH for Eternal Life, that they try everything in their own power to live forever on their own. But they forget, like Job and David says.. how can mortals even think for a moment that they can be greater than their Maker? And what are we really.. that YHWH is still mindful of man, visits him and have love and grace for mere mortals?
Isaiah 56:2 says, “Blessed is the mortal H582 that does this, and the son of man that lay hold on it; that keeps the sabbath from polluting it, and keeps his hand from doing any evil.”
